We love it when celebrities get sober! One of the most motivating aspects of recovery is when a celebrity shares their experience, strength, and hope in the limelight. Drinking and using has brought many of us down in a demoralizing manner and it helps to know we are not alone in our despair. Although we never wish anyone to have to go through the anguish that addiction brings about, we do love a good success story in recovery.
Brad Pitt has been motivating in the recovery world to share just enough of his story to let us know that he was experiencing continuous strife due to the effects that drugs and alcohol had in his life. Even though the paparazzi for years have speculated about his situation, we know enough in our own addiction to find him relatable in the before and after of his recovery.
His Experience, Strength, and Hope
In an article that came out for GQ Magazine in May of 2017, Brad confirms that he has stopped drinking for approximately 6 months stating, “I was boozing too much. It’s just become a problem. And I’m really happy it’s been half a year now, which is bittersweet, but I’ve got my feelings in my fingertips again.” Pitt also was quoted by The New York Times in September of 2019 that he “spent a year and a half in Alcoholics Anonymous”. His motivation to get sober was the mistakes he made within his family that was caused while he was under the influence.
His Gratitude
In January of 2020, while receiving an award at the National Board of Review gala for his best supporting role in “Once Upon a Hollywood,” Brad Pitt thanked another celebrity during his acceptance speech for his sobriety. He received his award from Bradley Cooper, who also got sober in 2004 because he was not living up to his potential. Brad Pitt openly thanked Cooper for leading the way into recovery. In Pitt’s speech, he quips, ”Bradley just put his daughter to bed and then rushed over to do this, he’s a sweetheart.” Brad Pitt goes on to say, “I got sober because of this guy and every day has been happier since.” The audience, of course, applauded with excitement because everyone loves a good redemption story.
Brad Pitt is a beloved actor that so many have connected to on the silver screen – and now can connect to off-screen because of his sobriety. We also applaud Brad Pitt because of his genuine efforts to be a role model of recovery.
