On May 10, 1990, at the age of 26, Rob Lowe had finally hit the bottom he needed to kick drugs and alcohol for good. After reaching a pinnacle in his acting career and then going through a sex tape scandal, he had to make significant changes in his life to attain something even more powerful—his recovery. This past May marked 30 years of continuous sobriety for Lowe, which is an outstanding achievement.
Commemorating This Monumental Milestone
He posted on Instagram with this message, “30 years ago today, I found a sober life of true happiness and fulfillment. I am filled with gratitude on this anniversary. From a treatment center in Arizona to a bomb shelter in Israel, I have come to know many extraordinary people, and the fellowship of recovery has changed my life and given me gifts beyond my selfish imaginings.” He goes on to say, “If you or someone you love is struggling with any kind of addiction, there is hope! Love to you all.”
Carrying the Message of Recovery
Rob Lowe has continuously talked about his recovery and celebrated each year with the public. Not only will he share his length of sobriety, but he does a great job of encouraging others to follow down the path of recovery by expressing how amazing life is free from drugs and alcohol. He also gives interviews with a no-holds-barred approach, including one he gave on The Kelly Clarkson Show that revealed a secret to his success in his recovery.
He told Clarkson, “It becomes a full-time job, but it changed my life, it’s the best thing I ever did.” He also divulged that his biggest fear was that he would never have fun again, getting sober at the age of 26, without being able to drink or use drugs any longer. Lowe states during the interview, “My big worry when I got sober was, I wasn’t gonna have fun anymore.
I was young, I was 26, and I was like ‘I’m not giving up my fun!’ and I could never imagine ‘so when I get married, I’m not gonna have a drink? So, when I have a kid, I’m not gonna have a whiskey?’ Guess what? Yes, I didn’t have any of that, and it’s awesome.”
Way to go, Rob Lowe! Thirty years is a big deal and a colossal feat that we respect greatly. Here is to another 30 years, one day at a time.
